Children of the Corn (Zea mays)

I was inspired to plant corn seeds in May, 2020 during the pandemic. I planted 4 rows of corn seeds in the two tiers where I usually plant tomatoes on May 24, 2020. Ten days later there were 5-6 corn plants shooting up, but all were "eaten" by something, squirrels?, racoon?, a few days later.

I had leftover seeds a year later, and planted 40 corn seeds indoors in pots in early May 2021. 38 yielded plants I transplanted the plants at the end of may and by August 15 they were looking great. About 4 feet tall with little ears of corn on most plants. A few days later something (I'm blaming the raccoon) peeled and ate every last little ear of corn.
