Over 1,000 years ago (between AD 900 and 1150), Chaco Canyon was a center of life for the Ancient Pueblo Peoples (Anasazi means ancient ones). They farmed the lowlands and built great masonry towns connected by a far-reaching network of roads. The fifteen major complexes built out of sandstone remained the largest buildings in North America until the 19th century. Climate change is thought to have led to the emigration of Chacoans and the eventual abandonment of the canyon, beginning with a fifty-year drought commencing in 1130.
