Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus)

Galapagos, June 12, 2019

First seen in Shawangunk Grasslands on February 1, 2014. This is the place near home that we can regularly find these birds in early winter.

Most sightings near home have been of birds in flight at a distance near dusk resulting in mediocre photos. We got much better looks (and pics) of them on our Galapagos Island trip in June, 2019.

Our ebird observations

My first in Westchester County: a short-eared owl showed up on the Croton Point Landfill in late January, 2022. I didn't bother taking my camera, but got good looks at it as it hunted over the landfill. Fortunately, Mitch Goldfarb was on hand and snapped some photos including this one.
