Sukhothai World Heritage Site

Sukhothai was the first capital of Siam founded in 1238. The city of Kamphaeng Pet south of Sukhothai and Sri Semphat to the north are part of the Sukhothai World Heritage Site.

Sukhothai started as a chiefdom under Khmer rule and Khmer influence can be seen in the style of the oldest monuments.

Wat Sri Chum

The form of the "walking Buddha" was introduced by Sukhothai artists. It is also said that the Thai script was invented during the Sukhothai period in Siam history.
