Spiderwort (Tradescantia virginiana )

May 23, 2022

When these blue flowers first popped up in the front yard, I assumed they were some kind of weed. They grow in the gravelly part of my front yard where I ddidn't intend to have flowers, but since they are pretty I mostly leave them alone and they return every spring.

The blue flowers open in the morning and close up later in the day. They are growing like gangbusters!

The genus is named after John Tradescant (1608-1662) who served as gardener to Charles I of England.
