Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa/incarnata)

Butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa)

I planted a bunch of milkweed seeds in the back garden area and on the south side hill near the propane tank in September 2021, and put some more out in the front garden bed by the birch trees. Planted more milkweed seeds in the back garden in May 6. Most seeds came from Diane, and also got some in the mail from the Monarch Butterfly Project. None resulted in any plants yet (summer 2022).

Diane gave me a couple of plants, and I purchased two more at Hilltop Nursery in Croton July 1, 2022.

Planted 3 in the lower north side tier on July 2, 2022 and one larger one (Asclepias incarnata) in the front yard next to the gate. It's been a super hot summer so far and I've been watering frequently. One of the butterfly milkweeds looks mostly dead. The other 3 are hanging in there, though the one by the front gate has a lot of yellow leaves. Moved the front gate plant to the back side tier in September - plant is probably dead.

Hot summer continued and the lower tier milkweeds are barely hanging on for dear life. I planted two more butterfly milkweeds and a Whorled Milkweed (Asclepias verticillata) on September 16, 2022 in the upper tier (photos below). The Whorled Milkweed may be more shade tolerant than the butterfly weeds.
