The Shirakawago Gassho-zukuri Village was located in a mountainous region that was cut off from the rest of the world for a long period of time. This isolation led to the development of unique cultural practices and lifestyles. In particular, the villagers subsisted on the cultivation of mulberry trees and the rearing of silkworms. The Gassho-style houses are unique wooden houses with steeply pitched thatched roofs and multiple floors that evolved to adapt to the natural environment.
