Zwinger Palace

Photos from the Zwinger in Dresden from our Germany - World Heritage Tour, June, 2008.

The Zwinger is one Dresden's main landmarks. The baroque building surrounds a beautiful large inner courtyard that was used for court festivities, tournaments and fireworks by Augustus the Strong.

The building complex was designed by M. Poppelmann in collaboration with sculptor Balthasar Permoser and built between 1710-1732. It currently houses several museums including the Old Masters Gallery, the Historical Museum and Armory, a porcelain collection in the Porzellansammlung, and the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon which displays a collection of scientific instruments including sextants, clocks and globes.
