Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao)

One of the first birds I saw on my Photo Safari to Costa Rica was the brilliantly colored Scarlet Macaw.

These birds were commonly seen and heard hanging about my lodging and elsewhere during this trip. Funny, however, I didn't realize they were "life birds" for me until I was reviewing my bird list at home.

I do have a vivid memory of seeing these birds as a child. I remember posing with them on me, one on each arm. I was 9 years old and the birds were heavy. After a little searching, I found the picture of me dated Jan 1969. This was from a family trip to California that year, and those Macaws were captive birds so "didn't count". But, I remember them to this day. And now I have seen Scarlet Macaws in the wild as well.
