Imperial Cormorant (Leucocarbo atriceps)

Falklands: New Island, December 17, 2014

We first saw an Imperial Cormorant (aka Imperial Shag or King Cormorant) on a cruise in the Beagle Channel during our 1993 Trip to the End of the World. We also saw them in Puerto Natales, Chile on that same trip, but we were not birders at the time and didn't id them until years later when reviewing our trip photos.

We subsequently got much better looks at these shags when revisiting Ushuaia in 2014, and in the Falklands on our Southern Ocean Expedition.
